Performance
The new DC-actuated turbocharger from Borg Warner® provides drivers with a faster response time, more power at lower RPMs and reduced parasitic loads in low or no load conditions for impressive acceleration, grade climbing, towing capability and high-altitude performance.
The turbo with charge-air cooler is tuned to reduce noise, improve fuel economy and make MaxxForce 7-powered vehicles responsive and driver friendly.
The industry’s most precise high-pressure common-rail fuel injection system features electronically actuated piezo injectors that deliver up to five independent injections per cycle. This results in exceptional performance with low noise and emissions, as well as aftertreatment control without requiring external fuel dosing.
Electronic-actuation of the piezo injectors allows for unaided cold-starting performance with no white smoke at -20°F within 4 seconds.
Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH)
The MaxxForce 7 is the quietest V8 diesel engine in North America, registering only 68.9 dBA in a low idle test.
Precise fuel delivery with the piezo-electric injection system reduces NVH through multiple shots per combustion cycle. The system also utilizes a pilot injection into the cylinders, which also aids in NVH reduction. The total system improves the combustion rate and eliminates typical “diesel” noise.
The redesigned rear-mounted gear train eliminates noise and vibration causing crankshaft wind-up, making the MaxxForce 7 even quieter.
A single-piece nodular iron bedplate design retains all four bolt main bearing caps, making the engine more rigid and less affected by vibration, a feature typical of more expensive engines.
Reliability
The MaxxForce 7 is the most tested engine in International’s history.
- 80,000+ hours of engine testing
- 6 million miles of development and validation
The new high-pressure common-rail fuel system with piezo electric fuel injectors decreases the potential for oil leaks along the rail.
The new 32-bit ECM has fewer connection points (only three) for added reliability, and has added capability for control of aftertreatment systems.
The integrated chassis and engine wiring harness with cam-lock connectors reduces connections and corrosion points and features an improved path for less stress on the insulation.
Super-finish piston pins reduce friction between the piston and connecting rod to extend the life of the engine.
The fuel/water separator is corrosion resistant.
Single ECM / IDM simplifies electronics system.
Parallel cooling of critical engine components extends service life.
Directed piston cooling jets and gallery-cooled pistons help achieve maximum durability and reliability and assure outstanding power and engine life.
Hydraulic roller-cam followers provide a service-free valve train. Valve lash adjustment is not required.
Fuel Economy
The MaxxForce 7 is able to achieve double-digit fuel economy gains from:
- High-pressure common-rail fuel system
- Piezo electric fuel injectors
- Faster injection actuation
- Higher precision of fuel delivery
- Multiple injections per combustion cycle
- Torque-based software solution provides real-time fuel management to the vehicle operator. The system uses pedal position as a measure of how much fuel the operator needs based on load as opposed to how fast the operator wants to go.
- Optimized driveline and transmission
- Optimized calibrations
- DC-actuated variable geometry turbocharger
- Significantly lowered internal parasitic losses
- Cylinder head optimization
For city routes, double-digit percentage fuel economy improvement is possible when the transmission and drivelines are optimized. Talk to your local International dealer for more information.
Maintenance and Emissions
New bottom-mounted primary fuel filter filters down to 10 microns and is integrated with a water separator that contains a water-in-fuel sensor and corresponding dashboard indicator. The new design is primarily plastic so it is easier to maintain and corrosion proof.
Top-mounted secondary fuel and oil filters filter down to four microns for cleaner fuel to the injectors while their location provides ease of service, and low cost of maintenance and ownership.
Top-mounted lube-oil filter provides for ease of service, and low cost of maintenance and ownership.
Hydraulic lifters do not need valve lash adjustments, which means no associated service costs.
Emissions
The MaxxForce 7 is 2007 EPA emissions standards compliant with no impact on performance or fuel economy.
The closed-engine breather system is maintenance-free.
In-cylinder dosing eliminates the need for additional aftertreatment equipment. A pre-EGR oxidation catalyst (DOC) extends EGR life and reduces potential fouling.
