MaxxForce™ 9 for Class 6–7 Trucks

MaxxForce™ 9

MaxxForce™ 9

Medium-duty performance, improved.

The MaxxForce™ 9, built on the reliable and durable platform of the legendary DT 466, features upgraded components to meet the needs of more demanding applications. This engine is the driving force in International® DuraStar™ and WorkStar™ commercial vehicles and International® CXT™ and RXT™ trucks.

MaxxForce 9 and MaxxForce DT are built on a common architecture with the same bore diameter. The displacement is changed by the stroke.

Why choose MaxxForce 9? The MaxxForce 9 has all the great attributes that have long made the DT 466 the most trusted medium-duty engine on the market. It also has 22% more displacement, which means it doesn’t have to work as hard. And with governed speed 200 rpm lower, the engine doesn’t have to work as fast.

Start with the best medium-duty engine ever built and add:

  • Long-stroke crank
  • Strengthened case
  • Steel pistons
  • Titanium wheel turbocharger
  • Premium sub-components
  • The right technology

And the result is the right engine for your severe service application.

Premium Features

A titanium compressor wheel on the EVRT® turbocharger provides increased durability for higher horsepower applications.

Long-stroke crankshaft provides increased displacement.

Single-piece steel pistons, similar to the MaxxForce 11 and 13 pistons, are gallery-cooled for longer life and even wear. Also have a lighter overall weight compared to prior two-piece steel crown/aluminum skirted piston.

The thermal stress-relieved crankcase provides an improvement in strength over the MaxxForce DT.

The crankcase ladder adds rigidity and strength while reducing engine noise.

The bearing cap ladder ties the main bearings to the skirt of the crankcase providing added strength and maintaining alignment of the crankshaft under heavy loads.

More power at lower governed speed provides for longer engine life.

Larger displacement optimizes engine-braking power.

High-capacity oil pump, high-pressure oil pump, oil cooler, fuel injectors, aftertreatment components, vibration damper and high-ratio water-pump pulley.

Reliability and Durability

Premium plateau-honed wet-sleeve design provides heavy-duty durability characteristic of a big bore engine.

Six bolts per cylinder for even clamping and increased head gasket life.

Significantly larger main bearings than competitors (Cummins ISC, Cummins ISL, CAT C9)

Roller-cam followers provide increased durability and longer valve and camshaft life.

Replaceable valve seats and guides allow for easy rebuild to original factory specifications.

Four valves per cylinder provide better breathing, performance and lower emissions.

Foam-molded wiring harness increases quality and durability. First time quality- fits right every time, no connectors pulled out. Long-term reliability- robust to chaffing and no stress on wires. Serviceability- easy to remove and reinstall harnesses. Injector harness has half as many connectors to valve cover gasket.

A new 32-bit ECM has fewer connection points for added reliability, and has added capability for control of aftertreatment systems.

10-groove belt improves belt life and allows additional accessory loads to be added.

Optional 60-watt fuel heater for faster starts in cold weather.

Wide Vocational Capability

The MaxxForce 9 is purpose-built to the needs of its customers for thousands of potential truck configurations.

Three different horsepower and torque options offer 300-330 hp and 800-950 lb.-ft. of torque.

Serviceability

  • Low-cost in-chassis rebuild capability for long service life and strong resale value.
  • Top-loading fuel filter and fuel/water separator provide ease of maintenance.
  • Standard integrated water-in-fuel sensor with dashboard indicator light.
  • Top-loading fuel strainer.
  • Standard integrated fuel filter restriction indicator.
  • Maintenance-free closed crankcase ventilation system features a centrifugal oil mist separator. In-cylinder dosing eliminates the need for additional after treatment equipment.
  • Compatible with AWARE™ Vehicle Intelligence onboard diagnostics system.

Proven Innovations

The International® Electro-Hydraulic Generation Two (G2) fuel system offers full electronic control for optimized fuel delivery, which results in fuel economy improvement of up to 5%, dependant upon application and duty cycle. The G2 fuel system enables diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration without downstream equipment.

G2 in-cylinder dosing for DPF regeneration

  • Additional exhaust heat is occasionally required to oxidize particulate matter trapped in the DPF. G2 injectors deliver a second dose of fuel after combustion is complete. The unburned fuel is pushed out of the cylinder with the exhaust where it oxidizes in a flow through catalyst, releasing heat. The heat from the oxidation reduces soot deposits in the DPF to CO2 and water.
  • Engine throttling along with turbine vane control allows the exhaust temperature to be raised for active regeneration prior to in-cylinder dosing. The throttle can also close to protect DPF from high temperature damage.

The International® EVRT® (electronic variable response turbine) electronically controlled turbocharger improves the engine’s torque curve and response, as well as provides exhaust backpressure to control exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) flow rate and exhaust braking.

  • Corrosion resistant internal components
  • Multiple improvements to DC actuators
  • Stainless steel ball joints on actuator linkage
  • Titanium compressor wheel on ratings 245 hp and above

The optional Diamond Logic® engine brake by Jacobs™ provides up to 325 bhp of quiet braking power and can extend the life of your service brakes, resulting in lower service costs.

The optional Diamond Logic® exhaust brake is integrated into the EVRT turbocharger, eliminating the need for traditional exhaust brake hardware. The exhaust brake provides up to 185 bhp on the MaxxForce 9, further extending the life of your service brakes.

* Both brake systems integrate with cruise control to help keep the vehicle at desired speeds. * Jacobs is a registered trademark of Jacobs Vehicle Systems Inc.
