Purpose Built
The MaxxForce DT is tailored to the needs of International customers. It has a full range of automatic and manual transmission options and thousands of potential build configurations, all meeting the EPA 2007 emissions standards requirements, in order to serve the broadest range of on-road applications.
EPA 1998 and Euro III ratings are also available for export and off-road applications.
Reliability and Durability
Premium plateau-honed wet-sleeve design provides heavy-duty durability characteristic of a big bore engine.
Precision-machined sleeves result in even cylinder cooling, which means no hot spots and that cylinders stay round during thermal expansion. Competitor’s parent-bore and dry-sleeved engines have as-cast cooling surfaces. The resulting uneven material thickness allows for hot spots, which cause cylinders to oval during thermal expansion.
Wet-sleeved engines are able to be fully rebuilt in-frame with a works kit from International. This returns the engine to original factory specs for thousands of dollars less than remanufacturing and provides a strong value advantage at re-sale.
Six head-bolts per cylinder provide for even clamping and increased head-gasket life.
Bearing cap ladder reinforcement provides added strength, maintaining perfect alignment of crankshaft under heavy loads. *Select ratings only
The MaxxForce DT features significantly larger main bearings than competitors for resulting heavy-duty durability.
Compare:
- MaxxForce DT (wet-sleeved) 4.25 in.
- Cummins ISC (replaceable wet liners): 3.83 in.
- Cat C7: 3.51 in.
- Duramax 7800: 3.19 in.
- MBE 900: 3.36 in.
Premium Valvetrain
- Roller-cam followers provide increased durability, longer valve and camshaft life, and slow valve lash growth. Compare with flat tappets used in competitive products that have half the valve lash reset interval.
- Replaceable valve seats and guides allow for easy cylinder head rebuild.
- Four valves per cylinder provide better breathing, performance and lower emissions. There is also a reduction in valvetrain wear because the spring loads are reduced.
Foam-molded wiring harness increases quality and durability.
- It fits right every time, with no connectors pulled out, for first-time quality.
- The rugged construction is robust to chaffing and eliminates stress on wires.
- It is easy to remove and reinstall and the injector harness has half as many connectors to the valve cover gasket.
A new 32-bit ECM has fewer connection points for added reliability, and has added capability for control of aftertreatment systems.
A new 10-groove belt improves belt life and allows additional accessory loads to be added.
Optional 60-watt fuel heater for faster starts in cold weather.
Wide Vocational Capability
The MaxxForce DT is purpose-built to the needs of its customers for thousands of potential truck configurations.
Nine different horsepower and torque options offer 210-300 hp and 560-860 lb.-ft. of torque. Shift energy management technology allows for higher peak torque when used with select transmissions.
Serviceability
Low-cost in-chassis rebuild capability for long service life and strong resale value.
Replaceable valve seats and guides allow for easy rebuild to original factory specifications.
Top-loading fuel filter and fuel/water separator provide ease of maintenance.
Standard integrated water-in-fuel sensor with dashboard indicator light notifies driver by WIF light on dashboard eliminating the need to check the sight glass. Features an easy access drain.
Top-loading fuel strainer.
Standard integrated fuel filter restriction indicator notifies driver with a light on the dashboard eliminating the need to change filter based on an interval.
Optional 60-watt fuel heater is available.
Dual air conditioning compressors designed and validated by International engineering.
Maintenance-free closed crankcase ventilation system features a centrifugal oil mist separator, which means there are no filters to change.
In-cylinder dosing eliminates the need for downstream fuel injection equipment.
Compatible with International’s AWARE™ Vehicle Intelligence onboard diagnostics system.
Proven Innovations
The International® Electro-Hydraulic Generation Two (G2) fuel system offers full electronic control for optimized fuel delivery, which results in fuel economy improvement of up to 5%, dependant upon application and duty cycle. The G2 fuel system enables diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration without downstream equipment.
G2 in-cylinder dosing for DPF regeneration
- Added exhaust heat is occasionally required to oxidize particulate matter trapped in the DPF. G2 injectors deliver a second dose of fuel after combustion is complete. The unburned fuel is pushed out of the cylinder with the exhaust where it oxidizes in a flow through catalyst, releasing heat. The heat from the oxidation reduces soot deposits in the DPF to CO2 and water.
- Engine throttling along with turbine vane control allows the exhaust temperature to be raised for active regeneration prior to in-cylinder dosing. The throttle can also close to protect DPF from high temperature damage.
The International® EVRT® (electronic variable response turbine) electronically controlled turbocharger improves the engine’s torque curve and response, as well as provides exhaust backpressure to control exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) flow rate and exhaust braking.
- Corrosion resistant internal components
- Multiple improvements to DC actuators
- Stainless steel ball joints on actuator linkage
- Titanium compressor wheel on ratings 245 hp and above
The optional Diamond Logic® engine brake by Jacobs™ provides up to 275 bhp of quiet braking power and can extend the life of your service brakes, resulting in lower service costs.
The optional Diamond Logic® exhaust brake is integrated into the EVRT turbocharger, eliminating the need for traditional exhaust brake hardware. The exhaust brake provides up to 150 bhp on the MaxxForce DT, further extending the life of your service brakes.
* Both brake systems integrate with cruise control to help keep the vehicle at desired speeds. * Jacobs is a registered trademark of Jacobs Vehicle Systems Inc.

2010 MaxxForce DT
The DT has long been known in the industry as “The Legend.” The legend grew from a big idea: bring to the mid-range diesel market traditional big bore features like wet-sleeve design, in-chassis rebuild capability and premium design features. The resulting durability and performance, providing low cost of ownership and high residual value, drove Class 6-7 truck buyers to make the engine the market share leader for decades.
Diesel Power magazine, in naming the DT one of the “Top 10 Diesel Engines – Ever,” summed it up nicely: “Simply put, these are the favorite engines for fleet managers all across America because they run forever, are efficient, make good power for moving freight, and can be rebuilt right in the chassis of the truck… (They) have earned the respect of drivers and operators all over the world.”
Today, the MaxxForce® DT has evolved to meet demands for optimum performance and clean diesel operation… while retaining its legendary reliability and durability. These advantages ensure your business will be “Always Performing.”
