The path to meeting 2010 Emissions is clear.

Navistar Engine Group is a worldwide leader in diesel engine technology and production, and has always been ahead of the curve in meeting EPA emissions regulations as they have continued to descend to near-zero levels.

As 2010 approaches, Navistar® is confident that EGR, as a part of an integrated system, will be the best, customer friendly path to meeting these new standards.

EGR — An Incremental Step

The path to meeting 2010 emissions standards with EGR is just another incremental step for Navistar, not a radical change. The company has utilized EGR to meet emissions standards since 2002. It was a key and effective technology for meeting 2007 regulations, as customers can attest, and thus will be an integral part of the solution for 2010.

Business as Usual for Navistar® Customers in 2010

With EGR in 2010 it will be business as usual for Navistar customers. There will be no radical equipment changes. Operating and maintenance procedures will be the same as they have been. There won’t be any incremental NOx after-treatment on any core on-highway application in 2010 beyond what has been so successful in 2007. TEM’s won’t have to build around new hardware because there will be none. EGR will be the customer-focused, customer-preferred emissions solution because it’s the proven technology that customers already understand, know is easily serviced and use transparently in their operations.

Fuel Economy Gains

Fuel Economy

With the technology changes necessary to meet 2007 EPA emissions regulations there was uncertainty about the impact they would have on fuel economy. For Navistar customers with MaxxForce™ engines, EGR was not a detriment to achieving the fuel economy requirements they require. In fact, Navistar has achieved up to 7 to 12 percent gains on 2007 MaxxForce-powered DuraStar™ trucks. Those gains are due to the integrated truck and engine advantage — aerodynamics, engine and transmission optimization, tire selection, duty cycle/load factor and component specifications — that allows Navistar to provide its customers with better system solutions. Furthermore, as a result of Navistar’s success in 2007 and from early laboratory data, we believe the MaxxForce™ engines will have overall better cost of ownership when compared to the 2010 SCR [Selective Catalytic Reduction] after treatment approach which requires an additional fluid, maintenance and hardware.

An Integrated Approach

There are advantages to being an integrated truck and engine manufacturer. Navistar’s engineering teams continually work together to minimize the impact of EGR on fuel economy and heat rejection and improve EGR components to better manage the fuel system, airflow, combustion and controls. MaxxForce™ engines feature improved combustion, in part, through a unique combustion bowl design, as well as increased injection pressure, sophisticated controls and calibration and state-of-the-art air-path management. The product strategy for 2010 was set in 2004 when the engine platforms for all North American MaxxForce™ engines were designed with the rock-solid structural integrity that 2010 products will require.
