MWM INTERNATIONAL hits 3.6 million engines produced since 1953
BRAZIL, June 17, 2009 — MWM INTERNATIONAL Engines, leader in the development of diesel technology in the Mercosur, and fully owned subsidiary of Navistar International Corp, achieved the landmark milestone of 3.6 million engines produced since 1953, in its three industrial plants of Santo Amaro (SP) and Canoas (RS) in Brazil and Jesús Maria in Argentina. The first engine ever manufactured by the company was the KD12 model for industrial, agricultural and marine uses.
During the 50’s in Brazil, President Juscelino Kubitschek’s electing campaign used the “fifty years in five” motto, to summarize the structuralist economics model, with the ideal of promoting both economical and social development in the nation. During his administration, Kubitschek brought various foreign industries to the country, aiming at encouraging the domestic vehicle market.
“The significant incentives promoting the installation of a national automotive industry enabled initiatives and investments, such as MWM INTERNATIONAL, to foster the development of diesel engine production in the country,” explains Waldey Sanchez, President and CEO of the company.
The historical mark of producing the 3.6 million-unit was achieved June 10, with the Sprint 4.08 TCE model. This 3.0-liter engine powers Volkswagen buses and light trucks and mainly the Delivery 8-150 truck, that was a sales leader during 2008, in the light-truck segment. Delivering excellent performance in a wide rpm range and power up to 143 HP, this modern engine guarantees agility and low operational costs.
“By combining our resources, engineering expertise and product lines, Navistar and its subsidiaries, including MWM, have produced over 15 million commercial engines collectively,” said Eric Tech, Vice President/General Manager of Navistar Engine Group. “The exciting thing is that this is about much more than volume, this is about our designers, engineers and manufacturing personnel around the world, who for decades have been responsible for the performance and quality that made our success possible.”
History Records
The MS is the line with more units produced throughout the history of the company, totalizing 1,234,652 engines in three, four and six cylinder versions. This model has been used in various vehicular, agricultural and industrial applications, and AGCO is currently the main customer. On the other hand, high speed engines (HS, NGD 3.0E and Sprint lines), manufactured since 1995, have achieved 847,657 units produced to power pick-ups, SUV’s and light commercial vehicles.
In 2008, MWM INTERNATIONAL achieved two production records: by year, with 143 thousand engines; and by month, with 13,469 engines in October. Settled in the Mercosur for as long as 56 years, the company produces engines that power market leader vehicles in various segments, with models such as Chevrolet S10 pick-up, Volkswagen Delivery light truck, Marcopolo Volare microbus, and CNH TL75 and Massey Ferguson MF 275 wheel tractors.
